The Importance Of A Yearly Appointment With The OBGYN

Health & Medical Blog

As a woman, it is imperative that you are taking good care of your health and that you are not leaving out the standard OBGYN care you should be receiving. Too many women make the mistake of thinking that there is no need to go see the OBGYN unless they are pregnant or they are having significant problems that they need a solution for. However, there are many good reasons to keep up going back to your OBGYN every year. Here are a few of them:

To Check For Diseases

Even if you are in the prime of your life and you feel fantastic, you could still have a medical problem that you are unaware of. Some diseases can exist and give no symptoms, making a yearly exam extremely important. Through your physical exam and tests that will be performed, you will be able to detect something such as breast or cervical cancer. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease that you should watch out for as it is highly transferable.

To Discuss Your Birth Control

If you are using birth control, you will want to make sure that your doctor is well informed in terms of how that is going for you. There can be some hormonal changes within the body, and this can cause your body to react differently to the birth control method you are using. Your doctor will ask specific questions to make sure that everything is okay. If you have been experiencing discomfort, extra bleeding, or worsening cramps, your doctor can prescribe another brand of the same type of birth control, or switch you over to something completely different. For example, you can go from the pill to the shot.

To Establish A History

Having a good medical history on file at the OBGYN's office is a good thing because they can watch how your body and reproduction system have changed over the years. They can tell if there is a pattern of when you'll experience trouble with ovarian cysts or with any sexually transmitted disease that you have.

If you do not already have a doctor to go see for your annual pelvic exam, you will want to start your search. Check out some online listings or call your insurance company to see which doctors in your area take your insurance. They can help narrow down the list for you and give you their contact information. Reach out to a local OBGYN service, such as Women's Health Specialist PC, to learn more.

Outstanding In-Home Care

When my mother fell at home and broke her hip, we all thought that we were going to have no choice to put her in a nursing home when she got out of the hospital. My mother had always asked us kids to avoid putting her in any kind of home, but we didn’t know what else we could do. None of us were capable of giving her the kind of rehabilitation and care that she needed. Then her doctor suggested that we find out if her insurance covered in-home care. I didn’t even know that that was an option. I was pleased to discover that in-home care was covered by her plan. Now she gets great care from nurses and nurse assistants that come right to her in her home, where she wants to be. It’s a great option, and I’m so glad we have it.
